What is Lake Toya?
Lake Toya is a huge caldera lake born from an eruption. Natural beauty celebrates the passage of 110,000 years.
Lake Toya is the central lake of Shikotsu Toya National Park and has an area of approximately 7,000 ha.
The source of the pyroclastic flow caused by an eruption over 110,000 years ago collapsed, creating a "Toya Caldera."
Rainwater and other things accumulated there and Lake Toya was born.
It is the third deepest in Hokkaido after Lake Shikotsu and Lake Mashu, and the sixth deepest in the country, just like Lake Shikotsu.
It is known as an "unfrozen lake" that does not freeze even in the harsh cold of Hokkaido.
In addition, the average transparency of Lake Toya is around 14m per year.
